Who wrote the Hanuman Chalisa?

The Hanuman Chalisa was composed by Goswami Tulsidas, the saint-poet of the sixteenth century who also wrote the Ramcharitmanas. He wrote it in Awadhi, a language of what is now eastern Uttar Pradesh, rather than in Sanskrit — which is part of why it spread so widely among ordinary readers.

The poet names himself in the fortieth and final chaupai — “तुलसीदास सदा हरि चेरा” (“Tulsidas is forever the servant of Hari”) — which is the traditional signature of authorship. No manuscript in his own hand survives, so the attribution rests on this closing verse and on an unbroken tradition, rather than on a dated document.

What is the Hanuman Chalisa?

The Hanuman Chalisa is a devotional hymn in praise of Hanuman. The name comes from chālīs, “forty”, after its forty chaupais — the four-line verses that form its body.

The complete text is forty-three verses: two dohas that open it, the forty chaupais, and a single doha that closes it. Across them it recounts Hanuman's strength, wisdom and learning, his devotion to Rama, and episodes from the Ramayana such as the leap across the ocean and the bringing of the sanjivani herb.

It is short enough to recite in a few minutes, which is a large part of why it is among the most widely recited texts in Hinduism — commonly read daily, and particularly on Tuesdays and Saturdays.

How many times a day should the Hanuman Chalisa be read?

On ordinary days, reciting the Hanuman Chalisa once a day is both sufficient and considered good practice. If you have the time and are seeking particular grace or peace of mind, it may also be read 7, 11, 21 or 108 times. More important than the count is that the recitation is done with full devotion and a sincere heart.

What is the mantra of the Hanuman Chalisa?

The Hanuman Chalisa is a complete stotra in its own right, composed by Goswami Tulsidas in forty chaupais along with its dohas. It opens and closes with dohas, and it contains no single separate mantra — instead, each line and each chaupai is held to be as powerful as a mahamantra in itself.

What happens if you read the Hanuman Chalisa every day?

It is believed that reciting the Hanuman Chalisa daily drives away fear and anxiety, steadies the mind and strengthens confidence. Tradition holds it to be a means of protection from difficulty and of gaining strength, wisdom and learning — as the verse itself says, “Sankat katai mitai sab peeraa, jo sumirai Hanumat balabeeraa” (“Troubles are cut away and all pain ends for the one who remembers mighty Hanuman”).

In practical terms too, a few minutes of recitation at a fixed time each day brings steadiness to the routine and helps settle the mind. This is a matter of faith and devotion; it is not a substitute for medical advice or treatment.

When should the Hanuman Chalisa not be read?

The Hanuman Chalisa may be read on any day and at any time. It is traditionally avoided, however, in a state of physical impurity, after consuming meat or alcohol, during the sutak period observed after a death or birth in the family, or in a state of great anger. Hanuman is held to be exceedingly compassionate, so wherever the heart is sincere and pure, the recitation is fruitful at any time.

How long does it take to recite the Hanuman Chalisa 100 times?

Reciting the Hanuman Chalisa 100 times in one sitting takes roughly 3 to 4 hours. A single recitation takes about 2 to 2.5 minutes on average, depending on the pace of the reader.
